Happy New year! This is a time for change, improvement and new beginnings. And when it’s time to come in with the new, you have to go out with the old. This is what NYE is for, a night of getting blackout drunk as a farewell to all the things you would much rather leave in 2022. Any relationships, worries and doubts are seen off with a giant load of beer and bad singing. When this famous night occurs, a lot of mishaps and embarrassing memories are made. New Year Nuisances: Can You Move The Car?
Trevor’s New Year’s Eve party was an annual occurrence with numerous guests arriving. During the evening, a man knocked on the door, was greeted heartily although no one knew who he was, and was led to where the drinks were, in the kitchen. He sat there happily, chatting away, for a couple of hours before a strange light dawned on his face. ‘You know,’ he confided to Trevor, ‘I wasn’t even invited to this party. I just came over to tell you that some of your guests’ cars are blocking my drive.’ He continued, ‘My wife’s been sitting out in the car waiting for me to get them moved, so that we can go out.’

New Year Nuisances: What Does It Mean?
Jemima was taking an afternoon nap on New Year’s Eve before the festivities. After she woke up, she confided to Max, her husband, ‘I just dreamed that you gave me a diamond ring for a New Year’s present. What do you think it all means?’ ‘Aha, you’ll know tonight,’ answered Max smiling broadly. At midnight, as the New Year was chiming, Max approached Jemima and handed her small package. Delighted and excited she opened it quickly. There in her hand rested a book entitled: ‘The meaning of dreams’.

New Year Nuisances: False Alarm

“I was about six months pregnant and my belly had just popped, so I literally couldn’t see anything beneath it. New Year’s Eve rolled around, and after using the bathroom, I wiped and saw blood. I absolutely freaked and thought I was spotting…so I went to the hospital. Again, it’s New Year’s Eve. 11 p.m. — I literally saw fireworks from the hospital bed. Well, it turned out I cut myself shaving my hoo-ha. I couldn’t feel any pain from it as it was very minor, but I also couldn’t see the cut either. The nurses were very nice and reassuring, but I was beyond embarrassed.”

New Year Nuisances: The Woes Of Wine

“My parents let me have some wine on New Year’s Eve when I was 16 or 17. I was at home with both of them — just family time. Unfortunately I ended up getting REALLY drunk in front of them. I pissed my pants in the kitchen while talking to my dad, and I woke up on the sofa with a busted big toe. Not sure how that one happened. This will come as a surprise to absolutely no one, but I never got drunk with them again.”

New Year Nuisances: Never Again

“My worst New Year’s Eve was the last time I’ve ever been wasted-wasted. I was 18 and realized that I could get into this big bar if I went early enough — like, around 7 or so. My boyfriend and I went in around then and started drinking beer (I didn’t totally know my limits yet), so I kept drinking pretty steadily throughout the night. We were having a good time for a while…but I kept drinking. Then, a little before midnight, I’m sitting at a table in the really crowded bar, and I throw up all over the table. I mean everywhere: all over the table, and all over myself. I was mortified. We ended up leaving in an Uber at 12:00 a.m. and I started the new year with nice (and well-deserved) hangover. And that was the last time I ever got that drunk.”

New Year Nuisances: A&E

“My worst New Year’s Eve was when I was 15 and my 16-year-old brother crashed my friend’s NY party. He got in a fight with a boy from another school who punched him with a ring on and split his whole forehead open. I had to call an ambulance and by the time the clock struck midnight, I was sitting in A&E watching my very inebriated brother have his face stitched up.”

New Year Nuisances: A Night In Norway

“My mates contacted me with a last-minute holiday idea as we hadn’t got anything arranged for New Year. They decided on Norway and ended up having an amazing night watching the fireworks at midnight, before hitting up a few bars till around 2am. We then faced the inevitable dilemma of where to stay. All of us should’ve booked a hotel the moment we got there, but our flight was delayed and we wanted to get on with celebrating as soon as possible.
We visited eight hotels – they were all full. After two hours walking around in the cold, we headed to take the shuttle train to the airport, where we tried to nap but were asked to leave. So we went outside and slept on the floor outside the station. It was beyond ridiculous looking back, considering it was snowing and minus something crazy, but I woke up in a pile of snow, got up and took my flight home. We were all young once. Let’s just say I wouldn’t do it again!”

New Year Nuisances: Sleepover

“I’m sure people have worse than this, but my most mortifying New Year was when I got far too drunk and woke up with a guy next to me in bed. It wasn’t until he rolled over that I realised it was my brother’s best friend, who was 11 years younger than me and who I’d watched grow up. I ran out and genuinely we have never mentioned it since.”

New Year Nuisances: Dinner Party Problems
Rochelle, 40
“Every year, I throw a big NYE dinner party. I was really excited last year, because I’d been dating a guy for a few months and was glad to have someone to kiss at midnight. We hadn’t talked much between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but I figured he was busy with the holidays. I cooked all day and made a great meal. My guy showed up late and the party was in full swing.
After sitting down for dinner, we went around the table saying what we’d like for next year. I said I wanted to take more trips with my boyfriend. When it was his turn, he sat there silently for a minute. Then he muttered that he couldn’t date me any more, got up and left. I was devastated. He hadn’t given me any clues that he was unhappy. I spent the rest of the night crying in my room.”

New Year Nuisances: Lecture
On New Year’s Eve, Daniel was in no shape to drive, so he sensibly left
his van in the car park and walked home. As he was wobbling along,
he was stopped by a policeman. ‘What are you doing out here at four
o’clock in the morning?’ asked the police officer.
‘I’m on my way to a lecture,’ answered Roger. ‘And who on earth, in their right mind, is going to give a lecture at
this time on New Year’s Eve?’ enquired the constable sarcastically. ‘My wife,’ slurred Daniel grimly.
